Sapporo, Hokkaido - City Profile
A welcoming and modern Japanese city
Often regarded as one of
the more
Western-styled Japanese
cities (it
was after all designed by an American), Sapporo remains
a truly Japanese city at heart. Modern, cosmopolitan for a Japanese
city, and beautifully set, Sapporo is one of the most popular tourist
destinations.
In summer, the heat and humidity are more tolerable than Tokyo, and evening fireworks festivals light up the nights. Sapporo and the surrounding area is crowded with attractions: museums, universities, parks, art galleries, restaurants, festivals, ski hills, rivers, lakes, beaches, and of course night life, something most Japanese cities are famous for.
Public transportation will get you anywhere, but car rental is an excellent way to see the city and explore the outlying areas.
In Sapporo, the best nightlife is found in Susukino, the largest adult entertainment district north of Tokyo. Susukino is comprised of several square blocks of bars, clubs, pubs, massage parlours, pachinko parlours, health spas, love hotels, and restaurants in the heart of downtown Sapporo. A summer evening spent wandering Susukino is an unforgettable experience: thousands of men, women, and children having a great time with very little trouble aside from jovial public drunkenness.
In addition to the Sapporo Snow Festival, Sapporo's other main tourist attraction is the annual Sapporo Beer Garden in Odori Park. Smack in the middle of downtown, the Sapporo Beer Garden (not to be confused with Sapporo Brewing Company's Bier Garden Restaurant) sees close to a million visitors enjoy freshly brewed beer, Japanese snacks, and entertainment in a beautiful setting in downtown Sapporo.
As a travel destination, Sapporo makes an excellent choice in winter or summer with world class hotels, charming Japanese Inns, friendly locals, fantastic restaurants, and plenty to see and do in the city and in the nearby countryside.
